New Zealand Rugby History 1995-1998

The team played its first match at home, against a Wellington XV. New Zealand Rugby Union (NZRU) was formed on Saturday 16 April. New Zealand Rugby Football Union or NZRFU was officially shortened in 2006 with the removal of the world “Football”.

New Zealand National Rugby Union Team competes annually with Australia and South Africa in the Tri Nations competition, winning the trophy a record ten times in 1996, 1997, 1999, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2010 in its 16-year history. The All Blacks have won over a record 75% of all rugby matches they have played since 1903. All Blacks won International Rugby Board (IRB) Team of the Year award in 2005, 2006, 2008, 2010 and a record fifth time in 2011. New Zealand captain, Richie McCaw, was the International Rugby Board Player of the Year for a record third time. New Zealand National Rugby Union Team is the current holders of the Rugby World Cup 2011 and wins their second Rugby World Cup title after 24 years.

New Zealand were again favourites to take the title of Rugby Worid Cup 1995. Rugby World Cup 1995 was the third edition of Rugby World Cup and was hosted by South Africa. Rugby World Cup 1995 was the first time that all matches were played in a single country. It was also the first time that South Africa participated in the tournament following the end of their international sports boycott due to the apartheid regime and had a fairytale ending. Rugby World Cup 1995 was the last major event of Rugby Union's amateur era. New Zealand was in pool C along with Wales, Ireland and Japan. New Zealand won all the games in their pool matches defeated Ireland by 19-43, Wales 34-9 and Japan 17-145 and reached knock out stage. New Zealand won quarter final from Scotland by 48-30 on11 June at Loftus Versfeld, Pretoria. New Zealand deteated England in the semi-final by 29-45 on 18 June at Newlands, Cape Town. A young Jonah Lomu scored four tries in semi-final against England. A confirmed favourite New Zealand team suffered an outbreak of food poisoning before the final.

World Cup 1995 Final New Zealand vs South Africa

Rugby World Cup 1995 final was held at Ellis Park in Johannesburg on 24 June 1995. South Africa defeated New Zealand 15-12, with Joel Stransky scoring a drop goal in extra time to win the final. The allegation of food poisoning was later publicly backed by Rory Steyn, a former head of security for South African president Nelson Mandela. He was the security liaison for the All Blacks and reported in a book that a Far Eastern gambling syndicate was responsible for the outbreak by bribing a waitress.

After the two months of Rugby World Cup 1995 the sport of Rugby Union turned professional, spelling the end of the amateur era at the top level, a new window of commercial opportunity was opened for the governing bodies of rugby playing countries around the world. As a result, the Rugby Football Unions' of Australia, South Africa and New Zealand came together to form the governing body of SANZAR, which was formed with the purpose of selling TV rights for two new competitions, the domestic Super 12 competition.

SANZAR

The Tri-Nations who in turn initiated the idea of a an annual test competition between all three teams, similar to the Northern Hemisphere's equivalent the Five Nations, which has since become the Six Nations Championship. SANZAR took full advantage of the new professional rules of the game to negotiate a multi million dollar television deal which would see the newly founded Tri Nations Championship broadcast around the world. Television has played an important role in the growth and popularity of the Tri Nations Series, allowing rugby supporters around the world to watch all the action live. This has firmly put the South African, New Zealand and Australian brands of rugby on the international map, particularly in the Northern Hemisphere, where audience figures have grown year on year and bookmakers in countries such as Britain and Ireland now report huge betting interest on the Tri Nations Series.

Whilst the rugby playing nations of Australia, New Zealand and South Africa have played each other in competitive rugby matches for over 100 years. The Wallabies, Springboks and All Blacks had regularly gone on tour to their Southern Hemisphere rivals throughout the twentieth century; however, it was not until 1996 that any formal structure was applied to the meetings between the three teams.

First Tri Nations South Africa vs All Blacks

The first ever Tri Nations game was played at Athletic Park in Wellington, where New Zealand beat Australia 43 - 6 and since that game it would appear that New Zealand rarely loosened their grip on the Tri Nations Championship since. The All Blacks won the first two Tri Nations Championships in emphatic fashion, going undefeated in the competition until the opening game of the 1998 series when they went down 24 - 16 to Australia at the MMC in Melbourne. South Africa went on to win the 1998 Series and In 1998 New Zealand lost all five Tests in the Tri-Nations and Bledisloe Cup series (two to South Africa and three to Australia), the first time they had lost four Tests in succession since 1949.

Webb Ellis Cup
Rugby World Cup is an International Rugby Union competition organized by the International Rugby Board (IRB) and held every four years since 1987. Rugby World Cup holders are awarded the William Webb Ellis Cup named after William Webb Ellis, the Rugby School pupil who (according to a popular myth) invented Rugby football by picking up the ball during a game and ran towards the opposition goal in 1823. Rugby World Cup tournament was first held in May and June 1987 and was jointly hosted by Australia and New Zealand, sixteen nations taking part. New Zealand became the first ever champions, defeating France twenty 29-9 in the final at Auckland’s Eden Park to claim the Webb Ellis Cup.

New Zealand Rugby Union played an important role in organizing the first Rugby World Cup, which has since become one of the biggest sports events in the world and an invaluable source of income for the development and promotion of the rugby game. New Zealand was in pool C along with Fiji, Argentina and Italy. New Zealand won all its pool games, Flanker Michael Jones, the first player to score a try in the World Cup in the opening win over Italy. All Blacks defeated Scotland in the quarter final by 30-3 and Wales in the semi final by 49-6.

On a perfectly sunny June day at Eden Park, France's confidence was high after the great Serge Blanco inspired a magnificent, last-gasp win over Australia in an epic semi final at Sydney, but Les Tricolores couldn't reproduce the magic against a sublime New Zealand side. The All Blacks crushed all comers to reach the inaugural final and defeated France in the final. Rugby was still an amateur game at this stage, and the Monday after the final, All Blacks John Gallagher and Murray Pierce were back on their policemen beats. New Zealand conceded only 52 points and scored 43 tries in six games en route to the title, beating Italy, Fiji, Argentina, Scotland, Wales and France.

The 1981 South African tour to New Zealand sparked protests against South Africa's apartheid policy the likes of which had not been seen in New Zealand since the 1951 waterfront dispute. The NZRU had invited the Springboks to tour as the Muldoon government refused to involve politics in sport. In 1981 Springbok Tour, New Zealand beat South Africa in the first match by 14-9 at Lancaster Park on 15 August. The All Blacks lost second game from South Africa by 12-24 at Athletic Park on 29 August. The Cavaliers were coached by Colin Meads, managed by Ian Kirkpatrick and captained by Andy Dalton and won just one of the four matches against South Africa, although they won seven of their eight other games on the tour. Dalton, however suffered a broken jaw in the second match of the tour against Northern Transvaal and played no more rugby that season,Jock Hobbs assumed the captaincy duties for the test matches against the Springboks while Andy Haden did the same for the midweek matches. all the players that participated in the tour received a ban for two tests from the NZRU when they returned to New Zealand.

New Zealand vs Australia in 2011 Tri Nations
New Zealand National Rugby Union Team is the current holders of the Rugby World Cup 2011.

1960’s proved to be the start of a dominant period in New Zealand Rugby. New Zealand National Rugby Union Team toured to the United Kingdom in 1963-64, in which New Zealand were deprived of a Grand Slam by a scoreless draw with Scotland. New Zealand lost only one match in the tour from Newport RFC by 3-0 at Rodney Parade, Newport on 30 October 1963. The 1967 side won three Tests, but was unable to play Ireland because of a foot-and-mouth scare. This tour formed part of New Zealand's longest winning streak, between 1965 and 1970, of 17 Test victories. This was also the longest Test winning streak by any nation at the time; it would be equaled by the Springboks from 1997 to 1998 and surpassed by Lithuania in 2010.
1967 New Zealand touring side

Although the Lions were defeated 0-4 in their New Zealand tour, there was a reversal of fortune five years later when the 1971 Lions, under the captaincy of Welshman John Dawes, beat New Zealand in a Test series, which remains the Lions' only series victory in New Zealand. New Zealand was narrowly missed a Grand Slam with a draw against Ireland in 1972-3 tour. The tour was notable for the sending home of prop Keith Murdoch, who was alleged to have been involved in a brawl in a Cardiff hotel while celebrating the defeat of Wales.

In 1976, the first ever season of the National Provincial Championship(succeeded in 2006 by the Air New Zealand Cup and Heartland Championship) went underway. In its inaugural format, Division One was made up of seven North Island teams and four South Island. The remaining provinces contested a split second division, though South and North teams did not meet each other, instead played their respective Island clubs. There was a separate relegation system in place for each the North and South, ensuring the number of teams from each island.

New Zealand National Rugby Union Team tour of South Africa generated much controversy and led to the boycott of the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal by 33 African nations after the IOC refused to ban the team. New Zealand again failed to win the Test series in South Africa. The 1976 Tour contributed to the Gleneagles Agreement being adopted by the Commonwealth Heads of State in 1977.

1978 Australia vs New Zealand
New Zealand National Rugby Union Team achieved their first Grand Slam in 1978, completed with a 13-12 victory over Wales. That game generated controversy after New Zealand won as the result of a late penalty. Lock Andy Haden had dived out of a line-out in an attempt to earn a penalty, but the penalty awarded by referee Roger Quittenden was against Welsh lock Geoff Wheel for jumping off the shoulder of Frank Oliver. New Zealand's only loss on the tour was the famous 12–0 defeat by Irish province Munster at Thomond Park. Later a play which focused on the loss was written by John Breen, called Alone it Stands. For southern hemisphere sides like New Zealand, a Grand Slam includes victories over the four Home Unions England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales in the course of a single tour.

New Zealand captain, Richie McCaw, was the International Rugby Board Player of the Year for a record third time. New Zealand National Rugby Union Team is the current holders of the Rugby World Cup 2011 and wins their second Rugby World Cup title after 24 years.

New Zealand National Rugby Union (NZRU) was admitted as a member of the International Rugby Board (IRB) in 1948, at the same time giving up its representation on England’s Rugby Football Union (RFU) Committee. The NZRU had made its first bid for IRB membership in 1908.

New Zealand National Rugby Union Team visited South Africa in the Captaincy of Fred Allen after the end of the Second World War, played the Springboks. New Zealand lost two Test matches on the same day. This was possible because Australia were touring New Zealand at the same time. On the afternoon of 3 September New Zealand, captained by J. B. (Johnny) Smith, were beaten 11-6 by Australia in Wellington. That same afternoon in South Africa New Zealand, captained by Ron Elvidge because Allen was injured, lost 9-3 to the Springboks in Durban. New Zealand also lost their second Test by 16-9, which gave Australia the Bledisloe Cup for the first time. Although each Test against South Africa was very close, New Zealand lost the series 4-0.

The two tours coincided because Maori players were not able to go to South Africa at the time, meaning the Australians, who were not considered strong opposition, played against a New Zealand team made up of the best Maori and the reserve non-Maori players, while the South Africans encountered the best pakeha (non-Maori) players New Zealand had. Also on the 1949 tour, Captain Fred Allen led a partial contingent of All Blacks to Rhodesia for two exhibition matches. The Rhodesia side beat the All Blacks 10-8 in Bulawayo and then drew 3-3 in the follow up match in Salisbury.

In 1956, the All Blacks won a Test series against South Africa for the first time. The Springboks were the All Blacks’ greatest traditional rivals and had delivered some of the All Blacks’ worst defeats. After splitting the first two Tests of the 1956 series, the All Blacks won the third and fourth to clinch a famous, long-awaited victory. During the series, New Zealand introduced Don Clarke and brought back Kevin Skinner in the last two Tests to help secure the win. In 1959, the All Blacks played in their 100th Test match, a loss in Auckland to the touring British Isles. New Zealand's 3-1 series won over the Lions in 1959 proved to be the start of a dominant period in All Black rugby.
