New Zealand Rugby History 1884-1899

New Zealand National Rugby Union Team known as the All Blacks represents New Zealand in circuit of International Rugby Union. The All Blacks are New Zealand’s number one national rugby side and have rated amongst the best in the world for well over 100 years. Their name and distinctive all-black playing strip have become well known to rugby and non-rugby fans worldwide.The first New Zealand team was selected in 1884, for a tour to New South Wales. The team played its first match at home, against a Wellington XV. The New Zealand Rugby Union (NZRU) was formed on Saturday 16 April 1892 to administer the game of rugby union at the national level. New Zealand Rugby Football Union or NZRFU name was officially shortened in 2006 with the removal of the world “Football”. New Zealand National Rugby Union Team is the current holders of the Rugby World Cup, wins their second title after 24 years.

New Zealand National Rugby Union Team competes annually with Australia and South Africa in the Tri Nations competition, winning the trophy a record ten times in 1996, 1997, 1999, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2010 in its 16-year history. All Blacks also hold the Freedom Cup played annually with South Africa and have completed a Grand Slam, defeating all four Home Nations during one tour, four times in 1978, 2005, 2008 and 2010. The All Blacks have won over a record 75% of all rugby matches they have played since 1903. All Blacks won International Rugby Board (IRB) Team of the Year award in 2005, 2006, 2008, 2010 and a record fifth time in 2011.

The first New Zealand touring side to travel abroad went to New South Wales in 1884 and won all 8 games, which included three games with a New South Wales Representative side 167 points were scored to 17.

New Zealand National Rugby Union Team first touring side under the auspices of the New Zealand Rugby Football Union, visited New South Wales, Queensland, Australia in 1893. However, this side was still not fully representative of the greater New Zealand since three unions were not included in the selection i.e. Otago, Canterbury & Southland (they joined the NZ union in 1895). Despite this, the tourists won 9 out of 10 games by 168 points to 44.

New Zealand National Rugby Union Team first representative rugby tour beyond Australia were called "The Natives", New Zealand played their first game in Britain on 3 October 1888. The Natives had originally been called New Zealand Maori. After five Pakeha were selected to strengthen the touring party it was renamed by its promoter on the basis that all 26 team members were New Zealand born. In fact two had in fact been born overseas. Most of the team assembled at a training camp near Napier in May 1888, and they played their first match against Hawke's Bay on 23 June.

Natives tour team

After playing nine matches in New Zealand and two in Melbourne in the southern winter of 1888, with only two losses, the Natives set off for Britain by steamer. New Zealand efforts to retain their fitness during the six-week voyage by shovelling coal and exercising on deck were thwarted by the complaints of other passengers, but they did take part in the first recorded rugby match in Egypt en route.

New Zealand National Rugby Union Team disembarked at Tilbury on 27 September 1888. Six days later, wearing black uniforms and after performing a haka, a team which had 'caused much curiosity' efficiently defeated a scratch Surrey fifteen 4-1. A further touring side visited Queensland, Australia in 1897 but neither side played a team representing Australia.
