New Zealand Rugby- Introduction

New Zealand National Rugby Union Team known as the All Blacks represents New Zealand in circuit of International Rugby Union. The New Zealand Rugby Union (NZRU) was formed on Saturday 16 April 1892 to administer the game of rugby union at the national level. At that time, the national union was known as the New Zealand Rugby Football Union or NZRFU. The name was officially shortened in 2006 with the removal of the world “Football”. New Zealand National Rugby Union Team is the current holders of the Rugby World Cup 2011 and International Rugby Board Team of the Year. New Zealand is the only international rugby team with a record winning margin against every test nation New Zealand have played. The All Blacks have held the top ranking in the world for longer than all other countries combined and in over 100 years only five of the top 20 test rugby nations have beaten New Zealand.

In New Zealand the game spread quickly after the first inter provincial rugby match took place in Dunedin, between Auckland Clubs and Dunedin Clubs in September 1875. In 1879, the first Provincial Unions were formed in Canterbury and Wellington. New Zealand National Rugby Union Team first competed in 1884 against Cumberland County, New South Wales, and played their first Test match in 1903, a victory over Australia. This was followed by a tour of the Northern Hemisphere in 1905.

New Zealand National Rugby Union Team formally adopted the black jersey as the national playing strip and selected the first NZRU sanctioned national team, for a tour of Australia in 1893. However, the earlier New Zealand team selected to tour New South Wales in 1884 is recognized as a New Zealand team and its players recognized as All Blacks.

New Zealand competes annually with Australia and South Africa in the Tri Nations competition, winning the trophy a record ten times in 1996, 1997, 1999, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2010 in its 16-year history. All Blacks also hold the Freedom Cup played annually with South Africa and have completed a Grand Slam, defeating all four Home Nations during one tour, four times in 1978, 2005, 2008 and 2010. New Zealand National Rugby Union Team is the current holders of the Rugby World Cup 2011 and wins their second Rugby World Cup title after 24 years.
