In 1902, the governor of New Zealand, the fifth Earl of Ranfurly presented a trophy shield to the Auckland side, which was undefeated in provincial competition that year. The shield became known as the Ranfurly Shield.
In 1903, New Zealand National Rugby Union Team played their first international test match with their revolutionary scrum against Australia at Sidney Cricket ground. New Zealand scored three tries to one in a 22–3 win.
In 1904, New Zealand played their first Test match on New Zealand soil, beating a Great Britain side 9-3 in Wellington.
New Zealand National Rugby Union Team was named "The All Blacks" toured the British Isles and defeated Scotland, Ireland and England in 1905. New Zealand was undefeated before arriving in Wales, under New Zealand’s captain Gallaher, the team was dominant. New Zealand defeated Australia by 14-3, then on the tour Scotland by 12-7, Ireland 15–0 and England 15–0. Wales were unbeaten too, thrashing England 25-0, beating Scotland 6-3 and Ireland 10-3. So the scene was set, Triple Crown Wales against the New Zealand this was billed as the ‘Match of the Century’. The ‘World Championship’ the top two teams in the world head to head. The game lived up to expectations; it was the most controversial rugby match ever. The arguments rage and still do to this day. One thing is for certain Wales won the game 3-0 and were crowned the ‘unofficial champions of the world’.
New Zealand National Rugby Union Team played 35 matches in total, losing just once. New Zealand was the first team to demonstrate the power and skill of New Zealand rugby, the first to make rugby a part of New Zealand’s cultural identity, and the first to be known as All Blacks. The 1905 All Blacks loss to Wales was the team’s first in a Test match.
